Jen

I was happier than I’d ever been since I was a child. I’d found the right man for me even though he was from a different planet and was a goblin—good goblin.

For a moment, I really believed I was going to die. Entire civilizations had been wiped out from foreign diseases. The Aztecs were an example, if I recalled my history correctly.

I felt alive and ready to take on anything. Being close to him brought tingles to my skin. I couldn’t wait to introduce him to my friends when I found them.

I’d been patient while he tracked, asking questions and trying to keep my mind occupied as he did what he could. Being a city girl, I had no clue how to navigate such an environment. Without street signs and GPS, I could forget going to any new place.

We had been walking for a while in silence. I wasn’t sure if something was wrong or if he was focused on the trail. He hadn’t been so quiet during our other travels.

“Is everything all right?” I asked him.

His back stiffened. “Why would you ask that?”

“You’re just quieter than normal.” Behind me, Thunder made a horse noise. Hyz’s conversation with his horse was weird. It seemed like the animal responded to what Hyz said. But Thunder was a horse. No way was that possible. He probably just made sounds in reply to Hyz’s voice.

Hyz spun around toward me. I stepped back in surprise. I’d been following close enough to reach out and tap his body.

He said, “Do you have a rock that glows?”

The strange question left me speechless for a moment. “You mean like the rocks the witch gave the three princesses?”

His wide eyes told me he hadn’t expected my response. “Seriously? What’s up with your planet and flashy rocks?”

He scowled and turned away, continuing through the trees, saying nothing.

I caught up to him. “Why did you ask?”

“No reason,” he replied, but I heard the difference in his voice. Something was up.

“Yes, there is. Why?”

“No, really. I was just curious,” he answered.

I rolled my eyes. “Of all the things you could be curious about, you choose a glowing rock?”

I hoped he’d stop and talk to me, face to face. But it seemed like he was avoiding me.

“Hyz,” I said, “what does the rock mean?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know,” he mumbled.

“Hyz,” I growled, done with this silent treatment. “Tell me.”

“All right,” he turned to me. “A woman with a streak of white through her black hair told me that my true mate would have a rock that glowed when near me.”

Wait. I’d seen that same woman. I tried to pull the image from my mind. There was a spinning carousel with horses. Something about Thunder. A snippet played through my mind. The three queens...bring them together. I gasped.

“Hyz,” I blurted, “I need to find a trio of queens. Do you know any?”

“Queens?” He stopped. “What queens?”

“I don’t know. In my dream when I was dying, that same woman with the hair told me I had to bring three queens together.
